Summary
The Excavation and Hand Picking of Buried Asbestos

Sanctus Ltd were appointed by Kier Moss on behalf of SEGRO Estates to remove 2000m3 of asbestos contaminated soils and demolition rubble historically used to backfill a basement.

Sanctus established a methodology for the controlled excavation and hand sorting of the materials to segregate the asbestos fragments from the soils and recyclable brick and concrete rubble. Hand-picking of licensed asbestos was carried out by a specialist licensed sub-contractor employed by Sanctus. The methodology was approved by the HSE.

A safe working zone was established, with entrance and exit only possible through a decontamination unit. Daily perimeter air monitoring confirmed that no asbestos fibres were released into the air.

Processed soils were sampled and sent to an independent UKAS and MCERTS accredited laboratory to check for the presence of asbestos free fibres. Materials found to be contaminated by asbestos fibres or small fragments were removed from site for licensed disposal. Recyclable materials, confirmed to be free from asbestos were reused onsite. Soils confirmed to be free from asbestos were chemically analysed and removed from site for licensed disposal.

Sanctus managed to recover significant volumes of clean soils and brick and concrete rubble which was crushed and reused onsite.

The project was completed within a tight four week programme. This remedial operation was offered as an all risk lump sum proposal and saved the developer in the region of £300k.
